The Unforgettable Experience: Miami Art Basel 2018!

by Vivienne Bardot

It is time to start the counting down! The art world’s attention is all over Miami! Another exciting Miami Art Basel is upon us!

Art Basel’s sophisticated, cosmopolitan crowd of gallerists, artists, collectors, jet-setters and celebrities, mixed with Miami’s unique, upbeat energy, transforms the Magic City into the place to be and be seen during the beginning of December!

Miami changes its outdoor landscaping and interior designs to host Art Basel: galleries, museums, some hotels, public parks and streets, are all transformed into art scenarios!  Miami emerges as the artistic center of the universe during Basel.

Art Basel Miami 2018 will feature over 200 international Modern and Contemporary art galleries and will exhibit art by over 4,000 artists. Artists from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa will all be united during four days of exhibitions at the Miami Beach Convention Center, which will be reflecting all of these different artwork perspectives and experimental paintings. Female artists have a very strong presence during this Art Basel edition, as well as main figures of Latin America art.   Afro-Caribbean spirituality will also possess these four unique Art Basel days.

What an unforgettable and enlightening experience!

Not only will the Miami Beach Convention Center radiate the Miami art scene during Basel, but also in South Beach, film screenings, performances and other exciting attractions will take place outdoors at Collins Park and SoundScape Park.

Other renowned satellite fairs, such as Art MiamiContext ArtAqua Art (29th edition!), the waterfront Art Fair and the Miami River Art Fair will shine as well, showcasing emerging modern and contemporary work and affording access by boat or water taxi – Truly a unique and “Miami” art world experience!

The Wynwood Miami Arts District will be even more colorful than usual, with street art, live paintings, music, innovative vendors and many other attractionsMana Wynwood will feature an unparalleled  experience with its events and art showcase – But be prepared to stroll around this eclectic neighborhood: Cars will not be allowed to disrupt the festivities in Wynwood during Art Basel.

One of the private exhibitions I am most looking forward to seeing, is Unauthorized Banksy, presented by the British gallery owner Steve Lazarides at Downtown’s Magic Innovation Studios.  One interesting aspect of this exhibition will be Lazarides’ own photos of Banksy early in his career… It seems that the mysterious Banksy’s face (and identity?) will finally be revealed!!!

These are just a few of the so many satellite fairs and activities taking place during Miami Art Basel 2018 – promising as always to be a frenzied, yet extraordinarily well-managed, affair.

With so much to do, see and experience in so little time, things can easily become overwhelming!  As with the world’s most visited art venue, the Musée du du Louvre in still beautiful Paris, it’s impossible to take in all of Art Basel.  Not only are its more easily digestible sectors a “necessity”, but when visiting Art Basel, it’s important to remember to FOCUS:  Is there a favorite artist that you enjoy, or a special gallery?  (For me, it would be poetic, figurative Marc Chagall, and for gallery, the contemporary Galerie Lelong in the City of Light.)

Keep reading throughout the week for more updates, artwork and interviews with major players!
