Without any doubt the Versace show at Milan Fashion week was one of the best and most interesting one. This happening was a grand tribute to the late Gianni Versace as this year marks 20 years since Gianni Versace was killed in Miami Beach. The tragic story actually put the designer’s memory back into the spotlight and American Crime Story will be depicting it in a few episodes coming out next year. After so many years what Donatella Versace wanted to do is probably to remember not the death of Gianni Versace, but his life and his absolutely creative genius.
“This is a celebration of a genius. This is a celebration of an icon. This is a celebration of my brother”. With these touching words the show began and it was truly emotional. Gianni was a real genius in fashion, his iconic creations brought out the sexuality in women of the 90s and made them feel more free and sure about themselves.
Held in the most elegant, but very modern location of Milan The Triennale Museum the show was a great tribute to commemorate Versace genius. The new collection shown by the modern top models was absolutely remarkable. All creations had an amazing similarity to the historic Versace collections of the 90s. As if time never passed Donatella once more proved that the fashion of the 80s and 90s stays always fresh. The cast of models was exceptional. There wasn’t even one model in the show that wasn’t globally well known. Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Douzen Croez, Natasha Poly rocked the catwalk wearing the new Versace SS collection 2018.
It was the debut on the runway for the beautiful Kaya Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s daughter. Like mother like daughter, she was impeccable on the catwalk. Genes don’t lie as they say and Kaya proved to be a really great model same as her mother was for decades.
Donatella remade and reinterpreted the main prints and designs of Gianni’s historic collections like Vogue, Warhol, Baroque, Animalia, Butterflies and Icons. Baroque prints on blouses, skinny pants or leggings, cat suits, long black jackets, little black dresses with golden embroidery worn with extremely high black boots, trenches, maxi skirts – this all is a big tribute to the fashion of the 90s, but at the same time a totally new extremely sensual look. There isn’t one piece of the collection that a modern “in – girl” or an elegant lady couldn’t wear!
High waist jeans in dark blue denim that make your legs look longer and slimmer, sensual black jackets paired with high jeweled boots, logo tees and the famous starfish print on most of the pieces would be every fashionista’s dream. A total come back of the leggings and with strong prints too for the spring-summer season which is always a comfortable day wear.
The main colors of the collection are definitely gold, black and white but the most amazing pieces of the whole collection were the delicate velvet dresses in soft pastel colors, mint, rose and summer turquoise. These dresses were shown by Gianni Versace in his collection 22 years ago and now Donatella reinterpreted those creations by making the designs up to date.
The true “come back” of the season will definitely be extensive presence of gold which was proved by the last but most amazing episode of the show when a real historic event took place. After the fashion show came to an end, all of a sudden the curtain came up and standing on stage there were Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Carla Bruni, Helena Christensen and Naomi Campbell, the top models of the 90s. Famous iconic models made a stunning appearance on the catwalk wearing long golden dresses made by Versace, who else? Leading the group was Donatella Versace, super slim all in black to pose together with the models in front of the totally amazed guests and numerous photographers.
Looking as young and fresh as in the 90s they definitely can be a great example of how a woman can look in her late 40s and even 50s, i.e. absolutely stunning!
With George Michael’s song “Freedom playing in the background the iconic top models did what they are best at – they hit the runway together with their host Donatella. Participating in the Versace show was their way to pay tribute to the great designer who used to be their “maestro” in the 90s and it’s been an outstanding moment for the fashion world. A real “golden” moment!
